In 2009, Harbour was founded when a large global asset manager decided to leave the New Zealand market. Five of their New Zealand-based investment team were encouraged by clients to form a business from which to continue their relationship. Harbour became operational in January 2010 and those clients remain with us 10 years on. Today we manage more than $5.3bn for a variety of clients including charitable trusts, community trusts, iwi, crown financial institutions, superannuation schemes, KiwiSaver providers and high net worth individuals. Harbour’s sole focus is managing external client money. This means we are not conflicted; we would not recommend a service provider we have a financial interest in, nor would we receive brokerage for placing investments into the family office portfolio. Our staff and their families invest in Harbour’s funds alongside our clients. Harbour has earned a reputation for following consistent and disciplined investment processes to deliver strong performance over time for clients. We have a suite of PIE managed funds and specialise in managing Australasian equity, New Zealand fixed interest and multi-asset funds. Today, Harbour has a team of 26 people which includes 14 investment professionals.
Environmental considerations, particularly climate change has been a growing part of our Environmental, Social, and Governance process as improving data and scientific research highlights the materiality of these effects on companies over the long term. Our research programme has involved two major projects focused on climate change, the first a benchmarking study to assess carbon emissions disclosure and performance across the NZ market and the second to gain insight into electric vehicles in NZ corporate fleets as a mechanism to decarbonise transport emissions. Environmental factors can influence company performance through both acute and transitionary effects such as write downs in asset values (‘stranded’ assets), regulatory costs and changes in consumer behaviour. Our integration process includes the following environmental issues:
- Carbon emissions disclosure and performance
- Environmental impact and risk management
- Energy use
- Waste
- Taskforce for Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) alignment
