The Canterbury DHB is the main planner and funder of health services in Canterbury. CDHB services a population of 543,820 people, covering an area from just north of Kaikoura to just south of Ashburton. About 9500 people work for the CDHB, which constitutes about half the workforce of the greater Canterbury health system. Canterbury DHB funds and provides a range of health services for Canterbury and, because it operates the only tertiary-level hospital in the South Island, it also provides complex care for other South Island DHBs.
As a District Health Board, CDHB partially funds 122 GP practices, 111 Community Pharmacies, Home Based Care providers, and 70 non-government organisations (NGOs) as well as funding the DHB provider services (this includes Specialist Mental Health Services, Public Health and hospitals).
