The Far North District is the northernmost territorial local authority in Aotearoa New Zealand. The Far North ranks as the 14th largest district by land area compared to other districts. About 74,700 people live in the Far North. Around half of this population live in small urban settlements located throughout the District. The largest townships are Kerikeri and Paihia on the east coast, Kāitaia to the north and Kaikohe, located between the east and west coast. The rest of the population lives in rural or semi-rural settlements. The Far North has a rich Māori history and significance nationally including the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, New Zealand’s most important historic site. The great explorer Kupe, who many iwi trace their lineage to, is said to have first set foot in Aotearoa New Zealand in the Far North on the shores of the Hokianga Harbour. Te Kaunihera o Te Hiku o Te Ika - Far North District Council is local government authority that provides public services for the Far North. This includes infrastructure services, land-use planning and resource management services, and regulatory services.
