Ko Ngāi Tahu tēnei e karanga atu nei.

We are the indigenous peoples of the southern islands of New Zealand – Te Waipounamu. All Ngāi Tahu whānui can trace their ancestry back to the tribe’s founder Tahu Pōtiki. We hold the rangatiratanga or tribal authority to over 80 per cent of the South Island.

We have our origins in three main waves of migration. The Waitaha people, then the descendants of Whatu Māmoe (Kāti Māmoe), and later the descendants of Tahu Pōtiki. Over time, Ngāi Tahu interests amalgamated with Ngāti Māmoe and Waitaha, and Ngāi Tahu established manawhenua in Te Waipounamu.

Today our hapū are represented by 18 Papatipu Rūnanga, which allows us exercise tribal democracy. These Papatipu Rūnanga are recognised in the Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu Act 1996 through our Treaty Settlement process.
Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu (Te Rūnanga), the tribal council, was established by the Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu Act 1996 post the Ngāi Tahu Claim and Settlement. Te Rūnanga was established to protect and advance the collective interests of the iwi. Today the number of registered tribal members exceeds 84,000 people.

The Office of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu (TRoNT) supports Papatipu Rūnanga to achieve our tribal aspirations, while the purpose of Ngāi Tahu Holdings (which includes Ngāi Tahu Investments, Farming, Forestry, Property, Seafood, Tourism and joint ventures) is to grow the asset base and create pūtea for TRoNT to deliver its charitable programmes to our whānau.
