Port Nelson is the maritime gateway for Te Tauihu – a vital hub for economic activity and a key contributor to our region's continued growth and prosperity.


For over 170 years Port Nelson has welcomed visitors and commercial operators to the region. Major export commodities from Te Tauihu include forestry products (logs, sawn, and processed lumber), seafood, pip fruit, and wine. Port Nelson is also the largest seafood processing port in Australasia, supporting and catering to the needs of some of New Zealand’s main seafood companies and associated fishing fleets.


PNL is a council owned organisation (Nelson City Council & Tasman District Council) with a Board of Directors. It maintains and operates a maritime port based in Nelson Haven at the top of South Island. Overall site area is 26ha.


The organisation employs 236 FTE (full time equivalent) employees in a variety of roles including driveroperators of port equipment, stevedores, mechanics and engineers, pilots, logistic co-ordinators, and variety of support and administrative roles.

PNL operates four main wharfs as well as a container yard, log yard and seven warehouses within border control operational area for international freight. PNL also operates two slipways, a workshop, a few offices, and owns but does not operate several smaller wharfs and buildings rented to third parties.
