The Ministry for the Environment Manatū Mō Te Taiao is the public service department of New Zealand charged with advising the government on policies and issues affecting the environment, in addition to the relevant environmental laws and standards.
Our purpose is clear - Aotearoa – he whenua mana kura mō te tangata – to make New Zealand the most liveable place in the world.
To make New Zealand the most liveable place in the world, we need our environment to prosper. So we work with New Zealanders to create change and we are at the cutting edge of policy. We engage and make connections, we provide evidence and then listen, we inspire, we invest and then we monitor the system to see what’s working. Our approach is to drive constant improvement across the environmental and natural resources systems.
The Ministry has a sustainability strategy which guides our own organisational sustainability performance. This strategy includes a commitment to measuring, reducing and reporting on our carbon footprint.
