Meet the people that power our solutions:
Certified B Corporation®
Toitū Envirocare is delighted to be a Certified B Corporation®. Certified B Corporations® (B Corps™) are for-profit companies that use the power of business to build a more inclusive and sustainable economy. They meet the highest verified standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability.
We are committed to being a business that not only acts as a power for good, but does no harm. Through our services, we empower other organisations to improve environmental performance, but within our own business we have taken specific steps to ensure we are improving our performance across five categories: governance, workers, customers, community, and the environment. So far, we have scored particularly well on customer care and environmental performance. We aim to improve our scores at every future certification.
Toitū Collective Impact
Since 2006, we have certified over 2,000 GHG inventories for companies from 5 countries, representing more than 192 million tonnes of GHG emissions – that’s more than twice New Zealand’s annual emissions. Through our Toitū carbonzero and Toitū carbonreduce programmes we have helped these companies to measure, manage and mitigate their carbon emissions. Our worldwide programme members have reduced emissions by over 8.5 million tonnes of emissions – that’s equivalent to the annual emissions of 2.4 million medium-sized petrol or diesel fuelled cars. On average, our members achieve over 20% reduction in emissions in a three- to five-year period.
As of April 2019, our top 10 carbon reducers have collectively reduced 58,956 tonnes of emissions; that represents a 28% average reduction of their combined footprint of 171,362 tCO2e.
Toitū Envirocare Impact
In addition to helping our collective reduce their emissions, Toitū Envirocare works to minimise our own impacts.
Our mission is to care for the life of this place, our people and our future. As part of this, we believe that we should be minimising the environmental impacts of our operational activities and maximising emissions reductions through the delivery and growth of our certification services.
Greenhouse Gas Emissions
As the owner and operator of the Toitū carbonzero programme, we do not claim to be Toitū carbonzero certified. However, we meet all the same requirements as our certified clients. Our emissions inventory is audited annually and we purchase offsets to achieve a net zero emissions total. For details of our inventory, reduction efforts and offsets please see the following disclosure statements.

As part of our carbon management, we are a signatory of the UNFCCC Climate Neutral Now initiative, which focuses on measuring, reducing and offsetting climate impacts.
Our greenhouse gas emissions targets have been assessed and approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
Toitū Envirocare commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 74% by 2030 from a 2017 base-year. Toitū Envirocare also commits to reduce absolute scope 3 emissions from business travel and employee commuting 57% by 2030 from a 2017 base-year.
Environmental Management System
As the owner and operator of the Toitū enviromark programme, we do not claim to be Toitū enviromark certified. However, we meet all the same requirements as our Toitū enviromark diamond certified clients. Our environmental management system is externally audited annually against the programme requirements. We are currently focused on making improvements to our system and our overall performance.
Impartiality, independence and integrity
We understand impartiality and commit to providing impartial and transparent verification services for the certification of greenhouse gas assertions, environmental management systems and energy management systems. We manage interests that have influence on impartiality and ensure that our certification activities are objective.
We conduct ongoing risk assessments to identify conflicts of interest. These are reviewed by our Senior Leadership Team and the Independent Technical Advisory Panel, which is made up of members representing our key activities and interests. Both actual and perceived risks are assessed within a conflict of interests and related parties register. Management actions are implemented to eliminate, manage or minimise conflicts of interest where they exist.
Conflict of interest is further covered through contractually binding agreements to ensure that all our certification activities are conducted with integrity in an independent and impartial manner. Personnel who are involved in verification and certification activities do not engage in consultancy or technical advice for these clients. We require internal and external personnel to reveal any situation known to them that may expose them or our certification programmes to any conflict of interest.
To provide our clients with confidence in our certification activities, it is essential that our certification decisions are based on objective evidence and that our decisions are not influenced by other interests or other parties.
Feedback, complaints and appeals
We welcome comments that our clients, stakeholders and the general public offer related to our website, our calculators and our certification programmes. Your feedback helps us to improve these programmes and the FAQ sections of our website and programme guidance. Please contact us with your feedback.
Should you have any complaints about our verification and certification services, we will work with you to resolve these issues in a timely manner. Where your organisation disagrees with a certification decision, we will acknowledge and investigate your concerns.
For Toitū carbonzero and Toitū carbonreduce members, if we fail to resolve your complaint within an agreed timeframe, you have the right to raise your complaint with the Joint Accreditation Service of Australia and New Zealand (JAS-ANZ) at www.jas-anz.com.au. Where your organisation disagrees with a Toitū carbonzero or Toitū carbonreduce certification decision, we will acknowledge and investigate your concerns. Accreditations and Recognition
The Toitū carbonreduce and Toitū carbonzero programmes are accredited by the Joint Accreditation System of Australia and New Zealand (JAS-ANZ) and were the world’s first to be accredited under ISO 14065.
Accreditation is the third-party endorsement of our competence to issue certification. This accreditation allows us to issue certification against ISO 14064-1 and PAS 2050. Our accreditation means the Toitū carbonreduce and Toitū carbonzero certification marks are recognised in over 60 countries through the International Accreditation Forum (IAF). See the JAS-ANZ public register here.
The Toitū carbonreduce programme is accredited by CDP (formerly Carbon Disclosure Project) as a suitable standard for verification of greenhouse gas information. Organisations who report into CDP earn 10-15% more points if they hold Toitū carbonreduce certification. The Toitū carbonzero programme can also provide certified organisations with a CDP compliant verification report.
We are accredited as a CDP Silver Climate Change Verification Partner. As a CDP Verification Partner, we provide independent verification and certification services for organisations measuring and managing their carbon footprint and reporting into the CDP global disclosure system. We help make your CDP reporting accurate and simple. Learn more at www.cdp.net.
We are also the first CDP-accredited science-based targets partner in Australia and New Zealand. Alberto Carrillo Pineda, Director, Science-based targets at CDP says, “We are delighted that Toitū Envirocare has become our first science-based targets partner in Australia and New Zealand. With over two decades of experience in helping organisations to understand baselines and set emissions reduction goals, we are confident their services will be of great value to companies looking to set and implement science-based targets.” Learn more about science-based targets here.
