Crown Law provides independent legal advice and representation to government, giving New Zealanders trust and confidence that decisions made by government are lawful. It supports the Attorney-General and Solicitor-General to carry out their roles effectively and in an independent and non-political way.
Crown Law provides advice and legal opinions and represents the Crown in court proceedings. Our expertise covers a wide range of areas including te Tiriti o Waitangi/Treaty of Waitangi, the protection of revenue, criminal law, constitutional and human rights, and public law.
We assist the Solicitor-General with the supervision and oversight of the Crown Solicitor network, public prosecutions and the conduct of criminal appeals, giving confidence to ministers and New Zealanders that prosecutions are conducted fairly and in the public interest.
Crown Law provides strategic leadership across the government legal system, delivering advice to government departments and identifying legal risks facing the Crown. By providing resources and development opportunities for the network of in-house government lawyers, we are strengthening and growing the skills and expertise of the government legal sector.
We work hard with our colleagues across government to uphold the rule of law so that all New Zealanders can have confidence in government decisions and the criminal justice system – now and in the future.
Crown Law recognises the impact that our operations have on the environment and are committed to improving our environmental sustainability. Our direct impact on the environment is driven primarily from the physical offices we occupy in Wellington and Auckland and the business travel we undertake. We are now working to measure and benchmark our carbon emissions for reporting to the Carbon Neutral Government Programme.
