Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort and Spa (EWVRS) experienced a major land slip in 2022 closing the only access road into Wolgan Valley which resulted in EWVRS to close temporarily. Due to ongoing access issues the Resort was closed indefinitely in June 2023. The unexpected closure of our resort has had a profound impact on our operations and ability to achieve carbon certification targets. The closure has resulted in the following challenges:

  1. Energy Consumption: The reduced occupancy and closure of facilities have led to a significant decrease in energy consumption. Despite our efforts to minimize energy usage during the closure, the overall reduction in operational activities has affected our ability to demonstrate substantial energy efficiency improvements.
  2. Waste Management: With reduced guest numbers and operational activities, the waste generation at the resort has decreased. As a result, our waste management initiatives and targets have been disrupted, impacting our ability to demonstrate improvements in waste reduction and recycling.
  3. Transportation Emissions: The closure has led to a decline in transportation-related emissions, as guest travel and on-site transportation services have been suspended. While this has resulted in a decrease in emissions, it has also affected our ability to implement and showcase sustainable transportation practices.

Mitigating Factors and Future Plans:

Despite the challenges posed by the resort closure, we remain committed to our sustainability goals and carbon reduction efforts. To address the impact of the closure and work towards achieving our carbon certification targets in the future, we have developed the following plans:

  1. Revised Targets: We will reassess our carbon certification targets to align with the current operational context and set realistic goals that reflect the impact of the closure.
  2. Operational Adjustments: As we anticipate reopening the resort in the future, we will implement operational adjustments and sustainability measures to optimise energy efficiency, waste management, and transportation practices once operations resume.
  3. Stakeholder Engagement: We will engage with stakeholders, including employees, suppliers, and guests, to raise awareness about our sustainability initiatives and garner support for future carbon reduction efforts.
  4. Conservation Projects: We will continue to focus our attention on existing and future Conservation Projects to preserve the surrounding environment and native wildlife. This may involve reforestation efforts, wildlife conservation programs, and initiatives to protect natural habitats within the resort area.
  5. Property Maintenance: We are committed to maintaining the resort and property to a high standard in anticipation of future reopening. This includes ongoing maintenance of buildings, infrastructure, and natural landscapes to ensure environmental sustainability and operational efficiency.

By implementing these measures, we aim to not only achieve our carbon certification targets but also contribute to the preservation of the natural environment and the well-being of the local community.

The unexpected closure of our resort has presented significant challenges in achieving our carbon certification targets. While the impact of the closure has hindered our progress, we remain committed to environmental sustainability and will continue to adapt our strategies to align with the evolving operational landscape. Through revised targets, operational adjustments, and stakeholder engagement, we aim to reinvigorate our efforts towards achieving carbon certification and demonstrating our dedication to mitigating environmental impact in the future.

EWVRS is a homestead-style resort located approximately 190km by road inland from Sydney, adjacent to the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. The resort complex consists of 40 free-standing suites, plus additional buildings for activities such as dining, recreation, and spa facilities. Additional staff accommodation (for up to 90 staff) and support buildings are also located on the property. The property has freehold over approximately 4000 acres (1600ha), of which accommodation occupies 2% of this land area. Of this 1600ha, approximately 530ha is comprised of what were previously DW and LC Stamer land, and 1000ha of previously Webb ownership. Additionally, there is approximately 1200ha of leased land.
