The Health Research Council of New Zealand (HRC) is a Crown Agent and the Government’s principal funder of health research. Our principal statutory functions include:
- advising the Minister of Health on national health research policy,
- advising on health research priorities for New Zealand,
- initiating and supporting health research, and
- fostering the recruitment, training, and retention of health researchers in New Zealand.
The HRC’s primary objective is to benefit New Zealand through health research. Our aspiration is that every New Zealander enjoys equitable improvements in health and wellbeing because of evidence and innovations from our world-leading health research system.
The health of our people cannot be separated from the health of our environment. As a leader in the health sector, the Health Research Council is committed to the achievement of environmental sustainability. Sustainability for the HRC means leading with integrity to improve outcomes for the environment of Aotearoa and the health and wellbeing of all New Zealanders.
