Healthcare
Mercy Hospital is not-for-profit surgical hospital based in Dunedin. In our eight theatres, we carry out over 7,000 operations and procedures every year, serving the people of Otago, Southland and South Canterbury. Additionally, specialist chemotherapy, angiography, cardiology stenting and pacing are offered by Mercy Cancer Care and Mercy Heart Centre. We are proud of our Charitable Outreach programmes, which see a significant proportion of our operating surplus each year supporting local and national charities that target community vulnerability.
Over the last decade, Mercy Hospital has increasingly considered sustainability and has maintained a range of initiatives that seek to minimise our environmental impacts. In unity with our founders, the Sisters of Mercy, we see the increasing importance of sensitivity to the environment. Our Mercy Hospital values include Whakaaute/Respect, which requires us to ‘consider the impact of our decisions and actions on the environment’. With these ethical drivers in mind, we have already implemented extensive tree planting, comprehensive recycling programmes, energy conservation initiatives, a worm farm for kitchen scraps and the inclusion of lifecycle considerations when evaluating new products – to name a few of our environmental programmes.
In June 2019, we began a journey to focus and further strategise our sustainability initiatives, using the Toitū Enviro-Mark® certification programme. Following substantial work around checking compliance and developing environmental management policy and processes, we were delighted to achieve silver level certification at the end of February 2020. We’re looking forward to developing new environmental goals and working on further improving our sustainability as we work towards the Gold level and beyond.
