Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa, New Zealand Customs Service (Customs) is here to protect and promote New Zealand across borders. Our core functions are:
- protecting New Zealand’s border (protection)
- promoting and facilitating secure and efficient trade to and from New Zealand (trade)
- promoting and facilitating safe and efficient travel to and from New Zealand (travel)
- collecting Crown revenue (revenue).
Customs employed over 1300 staff throughout New Zealand in 2019/20, and collected $15.11 billion of revenue on behalf of the Crown by way of duties, excise taxes, levies, GST on imports, and fees owed to the Government.
On 2nd December 2020, the New Zealand Government announced the Carbon Neutral Government Programme (CNGP). The CNGP has been setup to accelerate the reduction of emissions within the public sector. Customs is committed to maximising opportunities for energy reduction and savings throughout the business, in order to comply with the CNGP and establish the organisation as environmentally responsible.
The greenhouse gas (GHG) emission’s inventory reports into the Toitū Carbon Reduce programme and will be used as base year for the Customs Carbon Neutral Government Programme.
