Oranga Tamariki is a government department responsible for the well-being of children, specifically children at risk of harm, youth offenders and children in state care. Established in 2017, Oranga Tamariki - Ministry for Children's core business units are: Service Delivery; Māori, Partnerships & Communities; System Leadership; People, Culture & Enabling Services. Oranga Tamariki works broadly across the sector including with whānau or families, hāpu, iwi and Māori organisations caregiving families, NGOs and other Government agencies involved in the wellbeing of tamariki.
In FY2022/23 there were approximately 4609 full-time equivalent (FTE) staff employed at Oranga Tamariki. The agency holds a varied property portfolio and one of the largest government department vehicle fleets. Services are provided in a number of different property types across Aotearoa New Zealand including frontline and regional workplaces, family homes and Youth Justice and Care and Protection residences that operate 24/7.
