Forest & Bird is Aotearoa/New Zealand's leading independent conservation organisation. We are nature's voice and work to defend nature – across our Land, Fresh water, Oceans and Climate & Economy.
Land based activities: Our branches are involved in practical projects to restore nature – trapping predators, removing weeds and planting trees. We defend nature in the courts and resource management processes. We advocate for better resourcing for the Department of Conservation so that it can be more effective in protecting our natural heritage. We are working hard to seek better protection for nature on private land. We can turn around the crisis facing nature on land – but we need your help (associated campaigns are listed below).
Freshwater activities: We advocate for strong rules to protect our fresh water. We hold regional councils to account, and defend our rivers and lakes in the courts. We promote alternatives to environmentally damaging irrigation schemes. Our branches are involved in practical work to restore our waterways (associated campaigns are listed below).
Ocean activities: As a remote, island nation, New Zealand is globally important to marine life. But our oceans are one of our least protected environments. Extractive industries have been given almost free reign in our marine environment, and now many of our endemic and migrant ocean species are in serious trouble (associated campaigns are listed below).
Climate activities: Climate change is the biggest threat nature has ever faced. It harms our forests and oceans and threatens our birds, fish, and reptiles. We need nature, and nature needs us to change ‘business as usual’ to build a sustainable and restorative economy (associated campaigns are listed below).
Campaigns that Forest & Bird are working on include the following:
- Kauri Dieback
- Adapting to the climate crisis
- Stop Te Kuha Mine
