Forté Health Limited

Forté Health is a private hospital designed for short stay procedures, with five fully equipped operating

theatres, 14 recovery beds, and 22 overnight suites. Forté offers a range of elective surgeries, including

orthopaedics, gynaecology, urology, plastics, maxillofacial, and general surgery. The hospital opened in

2013 by a group of medical specialists who, in post-quake Ōtautahi Christchurch, saw an opportunity to

offer a new, sustainable approach to medical care.

Forté Health recognises the health sector consumes a significant amount of resources and energy while

providing patient care. With the global healthcare sector responsible for around 5 per cent of greenhouse

gas emissions, continuously reducing our environmental impact is crucial. After becoming New Zealand's

first carbon net zero hospital in 2021, we showed that sustainability and patient care are both achievable

in the health sector. Our sustainability efforts have seen us receive Toitū Enviromark Gold certification for

the past six years, and Toitū Net Carbon Zero certification since 2021.

As a tenant in the Forté Health building, owned by NHL Properties Ltd, we continuously look for

opportunities for new sustainability initiatives. During the design and build of the facility in 2014, the two

organisations worked closely together to ensure that sustainability was a core value. In November 2023,

Forté began a tenancy of the first floor of 144 Kilmore Street. This space is used for office administration,

meeting rooms and staff rooms. Emissions data for this building has been included from November 2023

onwards. Following the installation of solar panels in December 2023, we have generated between 130 and

147 kWh of energy in the subsequent financial years. Our current hospital building is designed to 4 Green

Star building rating. With our hospital expansion well underway, we are on track to achieve a 5 Green Start

building rating for our new build, with completion on track for November 2027.
