Manatū Taonga is a government department and is accountable to the Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, the Minister of Broadcasting, Communications and Digital Media and to the Minister for Sport and Recreation. We are also public servants, accountable to all New Zealanders, with obligations set out in the Public Service Act.
The Ministry’s primary outputs are:
Advice to Government on arts, heritage, and media policy for the cultural system, ensuring the cultural sector is inclusive, relevant, and sustainable.
Monitoring 15 Crown-funded agencies, appointment of board members, carry out governance duties, provide support and due diligence on behalf of ministers.
Administering 18 Acts of Parliament and seven regulations relating to the arts, culture, broadcasting and sports sectors.
Caretakers of taonga in transition.
Care for a portfolio of national memorials and war graves.
