Toitū Brighter Future Awards 2022

Our awards exist to acknowledge Toitū certified businesses that are leading the way in environmental sustainability.

The criteria for the awards is centred around demonstrating impact, and the winners will have to scientifically prove to be making a positive difference to the world around them.

Rooted in science, our categories are founded in data and measured across our member base of New Zealand businesses all working to collectively reduce their impact.

Toitū Envirocare Brighter Future Awards 2022 Winners announced!

We're excited to announce the category winners for the Toitū Brighter Future Awards 2022.

Each member has demonstrated measurable reductions across their business. While the last few years have made it difficult for many businesses to separate reductions from business-as-usual and the impact resulting from COVID-19, this year's winners have demonstrated great mahi towards continually reducing their impact.

We believe our awards are unique in that each category has data-based criteria by which our members are judged by. To qualify, our winners must have at least 2 years of comparable emissions. Performance is judged on greatest percentage change in absolute total emissions (all scopes, tCO2e) comparing the latest year certified as of June 2022 to the respective prior year, provided the finalists is also showing a reduction compared to base year.

Winner for the Climate Action (biggest reduction) in the Small Organisation category

New Zealand Superannuation Fund

Reduction (absolute % change to last year) = -97%

Reduction (tonnes reduced compared to last year) = -1,560.90

With a carbon footprint of less than 200 tCO2e, the organisations in this category demonstrated the most significant reductions during 2021-22. To qualify, finalists must have at least 2 years of comparable emissions. Performance is judged on greatest percentage change in absolute total emissions (all scopes, tCO2e) comparing the latest year certified as of June 2022 to the respective prior year.

Winner for the Climate Action (biggest reduction) in the Medium Organisation category

Achilles Information

With a carbon footprint between 200-5000 tCO2e, the organisations in this category demonstrated the most significant reductions during 2021-22. To qualify, finalists must have at least 2 years of comparable emissions. Performance is judged on greatest percentage change in absolute total emissions (all scopes, tCO2e) comparing the latest year certified as of June 2022 to the respective prior year.

With a carbon footprint over 50,000 tCO2e, the organisations in this category demonstrated the most significant reductions during 2021-22. To qualify, finalists must have at least 2 years of comparable emissions. Performance is judged on greatest percentage change in absolute total emissions (all scopes, tCO2e) comparing the latest year certified as of June 2022 to the respective prior year.

Winner for the Climate Action (biggest reduction) in the Product category

Reduction (kgCO2e/FU reduced compared to last year) = -0.42

In this category, products must have demonstrated the most significant reductions during 2021-22. To qualify, finalists must have at least 2 years of comparable emissions. Performance is judged is based on the product footprint intensity (kgCO2e/FU) comparing the latest year certified as of June 2022 to the respective prior year. The winner for this category will be announced with the other category finalists.

Silver Fern Farms

Reduction (absolute % change to base year) = -21%

Reduction (tonnes reduced compared to base year) = -26,093.83

Organisation of any size that has reduced the most emissions in terms of actual tonnes reduced - over their entire duration with Toitū Envirocare. Members needs to demonstrate at a minimum, it least a 15% percent reduction to qualify as an all time top reducer by volume.

Climate Action in the Top Reducer (closest to zero) category

Exceptional achievement in Environmental Management

Toitū enviromark gold certified

Organisations in this category must have been certified for at least 3 years and hold a minimum of Gold level Toitū enviromark certification. This category is about demonstrating exceptional achievement through public demonstration of its EMS (Environmental Management System), high performance in audits and showing incremental improvements in environmental outcomes.

• The Climate Action award categories considered the carbon footprint of 600+ New Zealand member organisations, generating a total of 2,829,021 tCO₂e (tonnes) of emissions.
• The organisations that reduced their carbon footprint, on average
  • Reduced emissions by 20% since getting Toitū certified over a 5 year period.

With a carbon footprint of less than 200 tCO₂e, organisations in this category must have been certified for at least 2 years (as of June 2021) and have achieved a reduction in absolute total emissions (all scopes, tCO₂e). From there, performance is judged on greatest percentage change (i.e., closest to zero).

Collectively, the five small organisation finalists have reduced 555 tCO₂e.

Toitū Brighter Future Award for Climate Action (medium organisation)

With a carbon footprint between 200-5,000 tCO₂e, the organisations in this category must have been certified for at least 2 years (as of June 2021) and have achieved a reduction in absolute total emissions (all scopes, tCO₂e). From there, performance is judged on greatest percentage change (i.e., closest to zero).

Collectively, the five medium organisation finalists have reduced 4,138 tCO₂e.

Toitū Brighter Future Award for Climate Action (large organisation)

With a carbon footprint between 5,000-50,000 tCO₂e, organisations in this category must have been certified for at least 2 years (as of June 2021) and have achieved a reduction in absolute total emissions (all scopes, tCO₂e). From there, performance is based on greatest percentage change (i.e., closest to zero).

Collectively, the five large organisation finalists have reduced 42,520 tCO₂e.

• Reduced 42% of its operational emissions since achieving certification in 2012

Toitū Brighter Future Award for Climate Action (+50k tonnes organisation)

With a carbon footprint over 50,000 tCO₂e, the organisations in this category must have been certified for at least 2 years (as of June 2021) and have achieved a reduction in absolute total emissions (all scopes, tCO₂e). From there, performance is judged on greatest percentage change (i.e., closest to zero).

Collectively, the five +50k organisation finalists have reduced 49,679 tCO₂e.

Toitū Brighter Future Award for Climate Action (product footprint)

The products must have been certified for at least 2 years (as of June 2021) and have achieved a reduction in product carbon intensity. Winners are based on the greatest percentage change (i.e., closest to zero) based on the product footprint intensity (kgCO₂e/FU).

• Reduced 68% of its product lifecycle emissions since achieving product certification in 2010

Toitū Brighter Future Award for Climate Action (international organisation)

A Toitū certified organisation outside New Zealand that must have been certified for at least 2 years (as of June 2021) and have achieved a reduction on absolute total emissions (all scopes, tCO₂e). From there, performance is based on greatest percentage change (i.e., closest to zero).

Collectively, the five international organisation finalists have reduced 37,028 tCO₂e.

• Reduced 57% of its operational emissions since achieving certification in 2012

Toitū Brighter Future Award for Climate Action (international product footprint)

The products must have been certified for at least 2 years (as of June 2021) and have achieved a reduction in product carbon intensity). Winners are based on the greatest percent change (i.e., closest to zero) based on the product footprint intensity (kgCO₂e/FU).

• Reduced 29% of its product lifecycle emissions since achieving product certification in 2014

Toitū Brighter Future Award for Climate Action (Top Reducer: volume)

Organisation of any size that has reduced the most emissions in terms of actual tonnes reduced.

Collectively, the Top Reducer: volume finalists have reduced 67,048 tCO₂e.

• Toitū carbonreduce certified organisation
• Reduced 23,382.39 tonnes CO₂e of carbon emissions since 2019, the same as the average emissions caused by nearly 1,200 New Zealand households.

Toitū Brighter Future Award for Climate Action (Top Reducer: closest to zero)

Organisation of any size that has furthest in reducing to absolute zero emissions i.e., largest % reduction.

Collectively, the Top Reducer: closest to zero finalists have reduced 555 tCO₂e.

Toitū Brighter Future Award for Environmental Management

Toyota Financial Services

• Conducted several in-house projects to reduce carbon emissions and positively influence staff, suppliers, and customers.
• Converted 80% of their client interactions to digital platforms resulting in lower paper consumption
• Toitū Envirocare auditors were impressed by the robustness and functioning of the Environmental Management System.

Sustainability Champion Award

A member of the Toitū Envirocare Team who has gone above and beyond to help New Zealand businesses decarbonise. This person exemplifies Toitū Envirocare’s values of Gold-standard, best practice sustainability expertise.
