Toitū Brighter Future Awards 2021

The Toitū Brighter Future Awards exist to acknowledge Toitū certified businesses that are leading the way in environmental sustainability. The criteria for the awards is around demonstrable impact, and the winners have been scientifically proven to be making a positive difference to the world around them.

Congratulations to the top performing businesses in each category; their hard work and endeavours are an inspiration and ensure a brighter and more prosperous future for all of us.

Some statistics

  • The Climate Action award categories considered the carbon footprint of 220 New Zealand organisations, generating a total of 2,829,021 tCO2e (tonnes) of emissions.
  • The organisations that reduced their carbon footprint, on average
    • Reduced emissions by 33% since getting Toitū certified. Collectively that means 183,554 fewer tonnes of emissions released in the atmosphere which is comparable to emissions caused by nearly 9,000 New Zealand households every year.
    • Have been Toitū certified for 5 years of membership in the Toitū certification programmes.

With a carbon footprint of less than 200 tCO2e, organisations in this category must have been certified for at least 2 years (as of June 2021) and have achieved a reduction in absolute total emissions (all scopes, tCO2e). From there, performance is judged on greatest percentage change (i.e., closest to zero).

Collectively, the five small organisation finalists have reduced 555 tCO2e.

This category is about demonstrating exceptional achievement through public demonstration of its EMS (Environmental Management System), high performance in audits and showing incremental improvements in environmental outcomes.
